The theme of imitation and copy is as old as art itself. From Antiquity to the 19th century, art has striven to be the most precise imitation possible of external nature. Since modernism, art has increasingly been making itself its theme. Since Marcel Duchamp’s famous readymade, art as reference or citation became an artistic strategy.

Master forgers work non-stop for rich collectors and commissioners who would much prefer to have a copy of a “Leonardo Da Vinci” in their homes than an origi- nal by a less famous artist. After all, it is quite legal to make a copy of a work 70 years after the death of the originator. By the way, the Kunstmuseum Luzern also has its very own copy of the most copied icon in art history: Mona Lisa.

In the context of our Collection Presentation, we would like to look into these phenomena of imitation, emulation, copy and repetition. The selection is complemented and consolidated by additional works on loan.

Kaleidoscope – Cross, 2019, and D.E.A.D., 2019, by Nils Nova
Nils Nova is an artist based in Luzern, Switzerland, but born in El Salvador. He can be considered a master of ‘trompe-l’oeil’. In his performances and installations, he always triggers the viewer into a play where nothing seems what it really is. He can appear as a look-a-like of Luis Buñuel or Elvis Presley. Or change the museum space into a real remake of a Dr Caligari set. With the performance D.E.A.D. and the installation Kaleidoscope – Cross, Nils Nova will be opening the series Someone Walking Around. The numerous competitions and exhibitions in which he has participated include the Venice Biennale 2009 and the Venice Biennale of Architecture 2014.

Dates: Installation Kaleidoscope – Cross, 2019: Friday 5 April – Sunday 30 June 2019.
Performance D.E.A.D., 2019: Friday 5 April 2019, at 19.00 h. Venue: Level 2 (Terrace).

Camera Lucida
das weisse haus
Exhibition dates: February 20 – March 30, 2019Exhibition opening: February 19, 2019, 7 pm

Published in 1980, Camera Lucida is undeniably one of the most relevant books about the photographic medium. This exhibition with the same title will showcase a series of artworks arranged in a specifc temporal order. It is through this choreographed succession of works and their consequently impermanence on site that Roland Barthes' book will be visually and poetically revisited. Shaped in the form of an audiovisual essayistic exhibition, the show "Camera Lucida" aims to function as a new way of reading Barthes’ text, a reading that could be described as deconstructed, fractured, or distracted, similarly addressing our contemporary modes of apprehending visual and textual information.

This experimental exhibition will present reproductions and documentation of artworks by Ignasi Aballí, Helena Almeida, William Anastasi, Claudia Angelmaier, Maria Anwander, Fayçal Baghriche, Jeremy Deller, Alicia Eggert, Claire Fontaine, Ana Frechilla, Cristina Garrido, Irene Grau, Tae-Bum Ha, Kiluanji Kia Henda, David Horvitz, Pierre Huyghe, William E. Jones, Kurt Kren, Ben Long, Lucia Nimcová, Tatzu Nishi, Nils Nova, Mike Parr, Sreshta Rit Premnath, Pilvi Takala and Penelope Umbrico.

When you spill salt, do you throw some over your shoulder? Do you knock on wood when you want something good to happen or blow out birthday candles after making a wish? What about stepping on sidewalk cracks, killing spiders, shattering mirrors and opening an umbrella indoors?

Curator, artist and magic thinker Erich Weiss assembled a wonderful cast for this subject: Nina Beier & Simon Dybbroe Møller, Otto Berchem, Pierre Bismuth, Santiago Borja, Ulla von Brandenburg, Stefan Brüggemann, Lilibeth Cuenca Rasmussen, Keren Cytter, Uri Geller, Joachim Koester, Germaine Kruip, Nils Nova, Joanna Piotrowska, John Stezaker and Mungo Thomson.

Artists have always had a fascination with phenomena that defy rational explanation. The surrealists were obsessed with the analysis and creative possibilities of dream states. Authors including Antonin Artaud, William S. Burroughs, and Alan Ginsberg explored (sometimes with help of drugs) the boundaries between reality and fiction. Directors Ingmar Bergman and Andrei Tarkovski captured the way superstition informed the imagination and consciousness.

The show opens with the hearts stealing (visual) artist/magician Uri Geller. This miracle-monger from Israel became world famous with his tricks, like bending metal spoons with his mind. The artist Ulla von Brandenburg uses theatrical devices to make us doubt about what is real or not, possible or impossible. Keren Cytter exploits all possible special effects used in film industry for the realization of her videos. Joachim Koester takes us on a journey to a subterranean world; a ‘road used by the dead’. Germaine Kruip explores in a site-specific installation the mind-blowing forces of the Aranmula Kannadi objects of India.

Nils Novas Kunst birgt Verunsicherungspotenzial.

Eco El Eco

08 abril, 2016 - 17 abril, 2016

Eco El Eco – Archivo vivo
23 abril, 2016 - 12 junio, 2016

Museo Experimental El Eco
Sullivan 43 Col. San Rafael Del. Cuauhtémoc, México D.F. CP 06470.

The Swiss-Salvadorian artist Nils Nova has created a site-specific installation for the rooms of Museo Experimental El Eco, which consists of a spatial illusion that insinuates a doubling of the space. Using photography, paintings on canvas and wall- paintings he fabricates a piece that exaggerates the perspectives of the emotional architecture of Mathias Goeritz, remembering the scenography
of the mute film made by Michael Weine in 1920, entitled The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari. Nova however is not so close to this German expressionist style, as he is to a visual and conceptual language typical for geometric abstraction that dialogues with the inhabitable sculpture created by Goeritz.
Eco El Eco continues Goeritz’s gesture to avoid almost all 90-degree angles in this building by drawing a black and white perspective that emulates a distorted space, extracting also the key elements of this architecture (the cross window, the yellow and black columns, the patio’s floor) by converting them into paintings that make of this installation an icon of this place.

Primer acto, Museo Tamayo, 2012; Spanische Wand, Kunsverein Heilbronn, 2012; Concrete Photography and Architecture, Fotomuseum Winterthur, 2013; Bekleidung, Nieuwe Instituut de Rotterdam, 2014; Reflections, SCHUNCK*, Heerlen, 2016.

Nils Nova - Reflections

SCHUNCK* Glaspaleis, Vitrine (0), Heerlen NL
Schunck*
05-02-2016 t/m 20-03-2016

In the store front of the SCHUNCK* Glaspaleis, artist Nils Nova will be creating a real palace of mirrors that will turn the existing facade into an illusion of infinity. In particular, it will be the optical levelling of space in his work that grabs the at- tention. The title has a double meaning: in addition to the recurrence of images, visitors notice their reflection in the glass and see themselves as part of this illusion.
The visual work of this internationally acclaimed artist has recently been characterised by an con- temporary analysis of the possibilities offered by the trompe-L’oeil, the trick-of-the-eye technique that seemingly distorts reality. From 1997 to 2001, Nova studied fine arts at the Lucerne University of Art and Design. His work has been displayed at the Venice Art Biennale (2009) and the 14th Internati- onal Architecture Biennale in Venice (2014), where he worked with Martino Stierli (MoMA’s Chief Curator of Architecture and Design) and Hilar Stadler (Las Vegas Studio). Recently, his installation ‘Twist’ appeared in the Nieuwe Instituut Rotter- dam, under the curatorship of Erich Weiss, who is likewise behind the Reflections and Hunger For Life presentations in SCHUNCK*.

THE ARCHITECTURE OF HEDONISM – Three Villas on the Island of Capri
Curated by Martino Stierli and Hilar Stadler
Artistic contributions by Nils Nova and Francesco Vezzoli

www.architectureofhedonism.ch

The Architecture of Hedonism – Three Villas on The Island of Capri

The island of Capri has long held a unique place in the collective imagination. Blessed with the beauty of the Gulf of Naples, it has since Antiquity served as a retreat from everyday business and politics, as a site for hedonistic enjoyment, and as a harbor of individualism. Throughout history, Capri was a laboratory for libertine and alternative lifestyles. Our exhibition looks at three moments embodying this genius loci: the antique grandeur of the Villa Tiberius, the fin-de-siècle decadence of the Villa Lysis, and the surrealist dream of the Casa Malaparte. We focus on how these buildings have been represented in popular media and have thus stirred the collective imagination. The presentation features artistic contributions by Franceso Vezzoli and Nils Nova.

Capri was developed by Roman emperors Augustus and Tiberius, both of whom erected luxurious villas to pursue their leisurely (and supposedly decadent) lifestyles, among them the celebrated Villa Jovis. This spirit was reanimated in the second half of the 19th century when Capri became a favorite resort for the European Bohème. Cultural—and eventually, mass—tourism was triggered by the German poet and painter August Kopisch’s 1838 publication Discovery of the Blue Grotto on the Isle of Capri. Subsequently, celebrities from many lands arrived and erected homes for their escapist dreams. Out of reach of the prudish moral codes of Victorian society, Capri favored eccentric lifestyles. Exiled from the Paris salons after a pedophile scandal, Baron d’Adelswerd-Fersen’s Villa Lysis became an early center of European queer culture. Ever since, Capri has been a symbol of sexual exuberance and unfulfilled desires. It was immortalized in Jean-Luc Godard’s classic 1963 film Le Mépris starring Brigitte Bardot. Its secret hero is the Casa Malaparte, unsurpassed in its framing of the dramatic landscape.

The island of Capri has been both an outlet of suppressed bourgeois fantasies, and the site for conspicuous decadence. From the perspective of contemporary politics in Italy and elsewhere, islands produce specific spacialitities and determine structures of power and social order. It is these spatial orders that we seek to explore visually.
